Kianoush Rostami wins gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympics

Kianoush Rostami (Persian: کیانوش رستمی‎‎, born 23 July 1991) is an Iranian Kurdish weightlifter. At the 2016 Olympic Games, in the category of 85 kg, he placed first, winning the gold medal and setting a new World Record with a total lift of  396 kg. He already has a bronze medal from the 2012 Olympics in London. Rostami holds the Olympic Record in the clean and jerk and the World Record in the total. Rostami trains alone, without a coach.

Career

Kianoush Rostami was born in a Kurdish family in Eslamabad-e Gharb, Kermanshah Province with Yarsan religion.

He won the gold medal in the Men’s 85 kg weight class at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships.

He won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men’s 85 kg category with a total of 380 kg. In June 2016 it was announced that the silver medal winner Apti Aukhadov had tested positive for prohibited substances and therefore disqualified for his medal. If confirmed, Rostami’s medal will be upgraded to a silver medal.

In 2016, while competing at the Fajr Cup, in Tehran, Iran, Kianoush broke the Clean and Jerk world record for his weight division, lifting 220 kg. Kianoush also broke the world record for his total, with 395 kg.

Kianoush Rostami competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, representing Iran in the 85 kg weight division. He won the gold medal in the 85 kg weight class at the 2016 Summer Olympics with an Olympic record 217 kg in the clean and jerk and world record 396 kg in the total.
